{"id":22876,"date":"2019-01-16T18:07:32","date_gmt":"2019-01-16T10:07:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.spinefitchiro.com\/?p=22876"},"modified":"2022-03-20T23:52:00","modified_gmt":"2022-03-20T15:52:00","slug":"understanding-several-reasons-for-shoulder-pain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spinefitchiro.com\/cn\/understanding-several-reasons-for-shoulder-pain\/","title":{"rendered":"Understanding several reasons for shoulder pain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shoulder pain is a common problem among the general population, and can include pain that occurs around the shoulder region <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anteriorly<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (from the front), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">posteriorly<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (from the back and along the shoulder blades), and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">laterally<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (along the sides of the shoulders, up to the sides of your neck). Therefore, stability is required through the support of the surrounding muscles and the ligaments and capsules around the joints. Traumatic Injury<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imagine slipping on a wet floor (or bathroom), and to break your fall, you put your arm and hand out. These types of falls are also known as \u201cfalls on outstretched hand (FOOSH)\u201d. FOOSH causes the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23971472\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forces to be absorbed through the shoulder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and depending on the direction of fall, may sometimes result in a dislocated shoulder. Alongside dislocations, soft tissue injuries may occur that only a radiograph\/X-ray or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) would be able to identify more clearly.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Overuse Injury<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Workplace strains such as overhead working, heavy lifting and working in awkward postures are possible risk factors for shoulder pain. Some examples are occupations like car mechanics where they have to constantly reach upwards to fix a car. An overuse injury<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0may feel like a pain deep within the shoulder that progressively worsens, with an insidious onset of pain during several days or weeks, getting worse with activity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Degenerative Pain<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.intechopen.com\/books\/pain-in-perspective\/the-epidemiology-of-shoulder-pain-a-narrative-review-of-the-literature\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extensive studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show that the prevalence of shoulder pain increases with age, possibly due to several reasons:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>a) longer duration of work over the years creates opportunity for gradual overuse injury, and<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">b) aging is associated with degenerative processes and changes of the shoulder and rotator cuff tendon, which may explain the increase in symptom reporting as we age.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the correlation of aging and shoulder pain symptoms does not necessarily mean that aging is a definite cause of shoulder pain. There are many people who age well without developing any form of shoulder problems, and this can be attributed to how well the muscles around the shoulder work to balance the loads introduced to the shoulder throughout the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Mechanical Pain<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The muscles around the scapula (the large triangular-shaped bone at the back of your shoulder, also known as the shoulder blade) must be properly synchronized for smooth motion during arm movement. Without proper working of the muscles, the shoulder tendons may impinge under the bones and create pain.
