The twisting motion can cause the meniscus to tear due to rotational forces directed at the knee joint.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you have a meniscus tear, the signs and symptoms often look like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A popping or clicking sensation when the injury occurs\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain, especially when twisting the knee while the foot is on the ground<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swelling and stiffness in the knee\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty fully straightening or bending the knee\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling like the knee is \u2018catching\u2019, \u2018locked\u2019, or \u2018giving way\u2019\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b><i>What are the different severities of a meniscus tear, and how long does it take to recover from a meniscus tear?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A meniscus tear has different types, and sometimes the type of tear determines the duration of recovery. They are categorised by both their shape and location when visualised on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26160\" style=\"width: 760px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/spinefitchiro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Types_Of_Meniscus_Tear_And_Their_Diagnosis-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26160\" class=\"wp-image-26160 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/spinefitchiro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Types_Of_Meniscus_Tear_And_Their_Diagnosis-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spinefitchiro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Types_Of_Meniscus_Tear_And_Their_Diagnosis-1.jpg 750w, https:\/\/spinefitchiro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Types_Of_Meniscus_Tear_And_Their_Diagnosis-1-300x158.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-26160\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">5 different types of meniscus tears, depending on location and type.<\/p><\/div>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Radial tear<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Radial tears run perpendicular to both the tibial plateau and long axis of the meniscus, originating from the inner free edge of the meniscus.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Parrot-beak tear<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Parrot-beak tears are radial tears with partially detached fragments.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Longitudinal tear<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013\u00a0 Longitudinal (vertical) tears run perpendicular to the tibial plateau and parallel to the long axis of the meniscus.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Bucket handle tear<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Bucket-handle tears are fragments of complete longitudinal tears that migrate centrally over the remaining menisci.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Horizontal tear <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Horizontal tears run parallel to the tibial plateau through the midsubstance of the meniscus. They are more likely to occur in people over 40-years-old with underlying degenerative changes, in the absence of a distinct traumatic event.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Complex tears<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Involve some combination of horizontal, longitudinal, or vertical tears.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tears that are more \u2018superficial\u2019 or \u2018shorter\u2019, aka in the outer \u2153 vascular zone of the meniscus are considered \u2018red\u2019 tears. Shorter peripheral longitudinal or radial tears are less likely to be severely symptomatic and may heal spontaneously, within 4-6 weeks of meniscus tear treatments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deeper tears with central margins extending into or contained in the inner \u2154 avascular zone, \u2018white\u2019 tears, may require surgery if conservative meniscus therapies within the first 6 weeks does not show appropriate improvement. If there appears to be improvement in terms of knee function within the first 6 weeks, usually physiotherapy is continued for another additional 6 weeks to see if gradual return to sport is possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b><i>In general\u2026<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recovery from a meniscus tear without surgery typically takes 6 to 12 weeks, depending on the severity and location of the tear.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The initial 4 weeks should be focused on resting the knee, reducing inflammation and swelling by ice, compression, and elevation, and also taking anti-inflammatory medication if recommended. Gradual load progression should be commenced, initially from minimal weight bearing till full weight bearing under the guidance of a physiotherapist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If symptoms persist after 3 months of conservative treatment (aka physiotherapy), surgery may be considered, and an MRI is usually recommended if one has not been done already.
