BIXEPs Therapy – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

If you’ve heard about BIXEPS therapy and want to know if it’s right for you, this page covers the questions we get asked most often at Spinefit. If yours isn’t here, just WhatsApp us and we’ll answer it directly.

What is BIXEPS therapy?

BIXEPS therapy is a non-invasive muscle recovery treatment that uses pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) to stimulate mitochondria — the energy-producing units inside your muscle cells. It was developed through research at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and ETH Zurich, and is classified as a fitness and wellness device in Malaysia (REF: MDAPC2023036). At Spinefit, we were the first private practice in Malaysia to introduce BIXEPS therapy back in 2022.

How does a BIXEPS therapy session work?

You sit comfortably and place one leg into the BIXEPS device. The device emits low-intensity magnetic pulses that penetrate the muscle tissue and stimulate mitochondrial activity at a cellular level. There’s no pain, no physical effort required, and most people feel little to nothing during the session — occasionally a mild warmth or tingling. Each leg is done for 10 minutes, so a full session is around 20 minutes at Spinefit Chiro & Physio.

Is BIXEPS therapy safe?

Yes. BIXEPS uses low-energy, non-ionising magnetic fields that meet international safety standards. It is non-invasive and doesn’t require injections, medication, or any physical exertion. It is safe for elderly patients, those recovering from surgery, and people with chronic pain or limited mobility. If you have a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device, let us know before booking — we’ll assess whether it’s suitable for you.

Who is BIXEPS therapy suitable for?

BIXEPS therapy works well for a wide range of people, including:

  • Older adults looking to maintain muscle mass and mobility
  • People recovering from surgery (e.g. ACL repair, knee or hip replacement)
  • Those with chronic pain, joint inflammation, or fatigue who can’t exercise intensely
  • Active individuals and athletes who want faster recovery between training sessions
  • Anyone experiencing age-related muscle loss (sarcopenia)

Does BIXEPS therapy replace exercise or physiotherapy?

No — and it’s not meant to. BIXEPS therapy works best as a complement to physiotherapy or exercise, not a replacement. Think of it as priming your muscles at a cellular level so that the physical work you do in physiotherapy becomes more effective. For patients who genuinely can’t exercise, it provides a way to keep muscle metabolism active in the meantime.

How many BIXEPS therapy sessions do I need to see results?

Research and our clinical experience both point to 12 weeks of consistent sessions — at least once a week — as the point where most people notice meaningful changes in strength, mobility, and pain levels. That said, some patients notice improvements earlier, particularly with swelling and pain. Like any form of rehabilitation, consistency matters more than intensity.
