Does PEMF Therapy Actually Work? A Straight Answer for Anyone Considering BIXEPS

You’ve probably seen the word “PEMF therapy” somewhere by now. Maybe on a physio’s Instagram, maybe from a friend who won’t stop talking about it, maybe on our own site under the name BIXEPS. And your first instinct was probably the right one: does this actually do anything, or is it another recovery gadget wearing a lab coat?

Fair question. Here’s the honest answer.

What PEMF Therapy Actually Is

PEMF Therapy stands for Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy, which is a mouthful for something fairly simple. 

A simplified explanation is this: Your body runs on electrical signals. Every muscle contraction, every nerve impulse, every bit of cell repair involves tiny bursts of electrical activity happening constantly to create connections of movement and sensation in your body, mostly without you noticing it actually happening in real-time. Without these electrical signals creating connections, we would not be able to move and function effortlessly. 

PEMF uses a device to stimulate those same connections which happen naturally in our body. It sends painless, pulsing magnetic fields through your tissue, and those pulses nudge the same electrical activity your cells already use to improve your body’s natural functions, and heal

No shock, no zap, nothing dramatic. Most patients describe it as a mild warmth or a faint tingling, if they notice anything at all. Considering how technical it sounds, the actual experience is almost anticlimactic.

 

What We Use It For

At Spinefit, we deliver PEMF therapy through BIXEPS, which we brought to Malaysia back in 2022. In practice, we reach for it when someone’s dealing with:

  • Muscle recovery after heavy training or competition
  • Soft tissue healing that’s taking longer than it should
  • Inflammation and swelling that won’t settle down
  • Chronic pain that hasn’t responded well to other treatment

It doesn’t replace a chiropractic adjustment or physiotherapy, and we’d never sell it that way. Think of it as the quiet teammate working in the background even after your treatment session is over, while the adjustment and the exercises do the heavier lifting in the clinic.

Is There Actual Evidence, or Is This Just A Good Story?

There’s real evidence, though it’s strongest in one area and still developing in another, and it’s worth being upfront about that rather than pretending the science is settled everywhere.

  • PEMF therapy’s best-documented use is bone healing. It’s been FDA-approved since 1979 for certain fractures that refuse to knit back together on their own, and a follow-up study on PEMF in nonunion fracture patients found that consistent daily use correlated with meaningfully faster healing. That’s not a small or ambiguous result. It’s one of the more solid findings in this space.
  • On inflammation, a 2019 review of PEMF and tissue regeneration lays out how it appears to influence the body’s inflammatory signaling at a cellular level. Promising, and consistent with what we tend to see clinically (Anecdotally, our patients do report reductions in swelling and faster improvement in recovery after injury with BIXEPS).
  • Muscle and joint conditions are where things get more interesting, and less settled. A randomized controlled trial on PEMF for knee osteoarthritis found improvements in muscle strength and physical function for that specific patient group, though the researchers were more cautious about what it did (or didn’t) do for the cartilage itself.

That’s a fairly honest snapshot of where the research sits right now: Strong footing for bone healing, a growing body of evidence for inflammation and cellular recovery, and encouraging but emerging research for soft tissue function.

None of this makes PEMF a miracle cure, and none of it makes it snake oil either. It’s a legitimate therapy with real research behind it, best treated as one piece of a recovery plan rather than the whole plan.

 

Who Tends To Notice A Difference

The patients who report the clearest results usually fall into one of two groups: (1) Someone with a soft tissue injury and inflammation that’s healing more slowly than expected, or (2) Someone dealing with chronic muscle fatigue, whether that’s from serious training load or the quieter damage of sitting at a desk nine hours a day. If you’re generally healthy and just curious, expect something subtle. If you’re actively managing an injury, the difference tends to be more obvious.

 

Is It Safe?

Yes, for most people. PEMF is non-invasive and well-tolerated, though it isn’t universal. If you have a pacemaker or any other implanted electronic device, we’ll skip it. We also hold off with pregnant patients, since the effects on a developing pregnancy haven’t been well studied and this isn’t the place to guess. If either applies to you, just tell us before your session so we can plan around it.

 

So, Is It Worth Trying?

If you’re already coming in for chiropractic or physio care and recovery has been slower than you’d like, it’s a reasonable thing to ask about. It won’t fix a structural issue on its own, but paired with the rest of your treatment, PEMF therapy is a tool with genuine research behind it rather than just a good sales pitch.
